Routes & Driving Notes

Legs, traffic tips, construction alerts & big-rig guidance
Rig: 2023 Chevy Silverado + 27-ft travel camper. Max drive target 3–4 hrs per day. All driving days are weekends or evenings after 5pm ET to protect Andria's work schedule. One planned over-limit leg: Pigeon Forge β†’ DC (~5.5 hrs, Tuesday May 12 evening). Use Google Maps or Waze for live traffic β€” conditions below are general patterns based on time of day and season.

Sunday morning departure is ideal β€” minimal traffic. I-75 N through Atlanta can be congested even on weekends; leave before 10am or after noon to avoid the interchange at I-285. I-40 E into the Smokies is straightforward. Final approach into Pigeon Forge on US-441 S (the Parkway) will have typical tourist traffic β€” expect slowdowns near shows and attractions.

⚠ Over-limit day β€” the one exception on the trip. Leave 5:30–6pm after Andria logs off. I-81 N through Virginia is fine after 6pm. The critical stretch is I-66 E into the DC area β€” this is one of the most congested corridors in the country during rush hour, but by 9–10pm it flows freely. Stay on I-66 E; avoid VA-7 or US-50 shortcuts with the rig. Toll note: E-ZPass required on I-66 inside the Beltway β€” either pay cash at the booth or use the E-ZPass transponder if you have one. Arrive Cherry Hill Park ~11pm. Call ahead β€” they have 24-hr check-in.

Friday evening on I-95 north of DC is notoriously congested β€” the corridor through Baltimore and into Delaware stays busy until 8pm+. Consider waiting until 6:30–7pm before departing to let the worst of it clear. Once past I-295 N (which bypasses the worst of Baltimore) and onto I-78 E through NJ, it smooths out. Stay on I-78 and I-80 through NJ β€” DO NOT let GPS route you onto local roads with the camper (low overpasses). Note: Delaware Memorial Bridge has a toll (~$6 eastbound). Arrive East Stroudsburg ~9–10pm.

Memorial Day weekend Sunday β€” expect heavier-than-normal traffic heading into upstate NY. Depart by 9am to stay ahead of the wave. I-81 N through Binghamton is fine. I-86 W is a relaxed rural highway. NY-14 S along Seneca Lake is the payoff β€” beautiful two-lane, narrow in places, fine at moderate speed with a 27-footer. The campground will be very busy; check-in early.

Exit at NY-324 W for HTR Niagara. Do NOT take the rig into downtown Niagara Falls β€” streets are tourist-congested and not trailer-friendly. Drive the Silverado to the park.

The stretch along Lake Erie through Pennsylvania (Erie area) can have construction ongoing β€” check PENNDOT.gov closer to your trip date. Ohio portion is clean and flat. 🚦 Traffic, Rush Hour & Construction Alerts

  • Atlanta (I-75 / I-285 interchange): One of the worst interchanges in the Southeast. On Sunday May 10 β€” leave Decatur before 10am or after 12pm to avoid the weekend shopping and event traffic that backs up the I-285 connector. I-285 itself can be slow any time of day near I-85 and I-75.
  • I-66 E into DC (Tue May 12 evening): This corridor has HOV-3 requirements and tolls during peak hours (roughly 5:30–9:30am and 3–7pm). Leaving at 5:30pm you'll catch the tail end of outbound evening rush. By 7–8pm it's clear. The toll can be steep during peak ($15–50+) but drops to free/near-free off-peak. You'll be entering around 9–10pm β€” no toll concerns at that hour.
  • I-95 Baltimore corridor (Fri May 15 evening): The section from the DC Beltway through Baltimore and into Delaware is consistently one of the worst stretches in the country on Friday afternoons. The bottleneck at the I-695 Baltimore Beltway and the Fort McHenry Tunnel clears by around 8pm. Waiting until 6:30–7pm before departing Cherry Hill Park is strongly recommended.
  • Delaware Memorial Bridge: On your Friday May 15 route (I-295 N). Eastbound toll ~$6. Can have backups on Friday evenings heading toward NJ β€” usually clears after 7pm.
  • NJ / I-78 overpass clearances: Stay on I-78 E and I-80 E through New Jersey with the camper. Local GPS shortcuts through residential NJ towns often involve overpasses and low bridges. Ignore any GPS routing that takes you off the interstate.
  • NYS Thruway (I-90) tolls: The Thruway runs from the NY-PA border through Buffalo and into central NY. Cash and E-ZPass accepted. Expect ~$8–15 westbound from Finger Lakes to Niagara. Keep change or card accessible at toll plazas.
  • PA I-90 construction (Erie area): PennDOT has had ongoing corridor work on I-90 through the Erie metro. Check PENNDOT.gov or 511PA.com a week before your May 29 departure. Night driving (after 5pm) typically encounters fewer active work zones.
  • Memorial Day weekend traffic (May 24–25): Heavy northbound traffic on I-81 N and I-86 W heading into the Finger Lakes and Adirondacks on Memorial Day weekend. Departing Sunday morning (May 24) ahead of the main wave is the right call. Expect campground access roads and state park parking to be very busy Mon May 25.
  • Niagara Falls State Park parking (May 27–28): Parking fills fast in season. Lots #2 and #3 on Goat Island are good alternatives if Lot #1 at Prospect Street is full. Consider arriving early in the morning (before 9am) if you want a prime spot.
  • Apps to use: Waze or Google Maps for live traffic re-routing Β· GasBuddy for fuel prices along the route Β· 511 (state DOT apps β€” 511VA, 511NY, 511PA, 511OH) for construction and incident alerts Β· iOverlander for RV-specific routing concerns.

πŸš› Big-Rig & Towing Notes

  • NYC day trips (Tue/Wed May 19–20): Leave the rig parked at Travis's in East Stroudsburg. Drive the Silverado solo into the city β€” do NOT attempt NYC or NJ metro area with the camper attached under any circumstances.
  • Philadelphia day trip (Thu May 21): Leave rig at Travis's. Drive the Silverado to Cherry Hill, NJ, park at a commuter lot, and take the PATCO train into Center City (~20 min, ~$3).
  • DC sightseeing (May 13–15): Cherry Hill Park has a Metro bus stop at the campground entrance. Leave the rig parked for the full DC stay. The park also runs a free shuttle to College Park Metro Station β€” take the Green Line directly into downtown DC.
  • NY-14 along Seneca Lake: Gorgeous two-lane with narrow shoulders in places. Perfectly manageable at 45–50 mph with a 27-ft trailer β€” just don't rush. Wineries and pullouts are frequent.
  • Niagara Falls downtown: Drive the Silverado to the park. Downtown Niagara Falls streets were not designed for long trailers β€” tourist buses and narrow lanes make it genuinely unpleasant. HTR Niagara on Grand Island is only 15 min from the falls.
  • Fuel planning: GasBuddy for current prices. I-81 and I-90 Ohio have frequent Flying J, Pilot, and Love's truck stops with easy pull-through lanes and diesel. Tank up before heading into downtown areas anywhere on this trip.
  • Level & setup priority: Budget 30–45 min for setup at each new campsite. Call ahead on any night you're arriving after 9pm to confirm late check-in procedures β€” Cherry Hill Park and HTR Niagara both have 24-hr check-in.
